Littlejohn: Bill and Kate
Around 1881, William Metheral and his wife, Catherine McLeod and their children Harriett and Neil, born in Lindsay, Ontario, migrated from Valentia and Little Britain, eleven miles from Lindsay, to settle in St Vincent, Minnesota where William worked at the Old Fort in Pembina.
In March of 1882, Bill and Kate moved to the Emanuel Littlejohn Homestead, three miles east of Glasston, North Dakota: S.E. 4 Sec.4, Twp., Midland, 160, Range 52 W. This property is now owned by and the home of Bert Olson. It is here that Sara Jane Littlejohn was born on March 8, 1884.
Shortly thereafter, they moved to the William Metheral Homestead: S.E. 4, Sec.32, Twp, 161, N. Range 52 W. Carlisle Twp. This property is now owned by William Vistade. The following children were born here:
-Ida Lillian - October 8, 1886
-Margaret Sophia - August 20, 1890
-John Wesley - January 20, 1893
About 1895, Bill and Kate moved to a property located about one mile west of here, which they purchased: Sec.6, Twp. 160 N., Range 52 W., Midland. This property is now owned by Mr. and Mrs. Henry Lane. Mrs Lane ( Irene) is the granddaughter of Emanuel Littlejohn. Born here were:
-Hughie Albert - January 2, 1896
-Rachel Melvina - March 8, 1897
-Rozena May - February 10, 1898
- William Roscoe - January 3, 1902
When Bill and Kate first came to the Glasston area, farming was done with the help of oxen. Their oxen were named Old Buck and Bright. The feet of the oxen would become sore from burned stubble worked under their hooves, so leather boots were made to protect their feet.
Later farming was done using horses. Some of the horses were named Fanny, Charlie, Old George, Sis, Floss and Kate. The Littlejohns had two dogs, Collie and Darkey.
When the Littlejohns first settled at Glasston there were no schools. For a while Hattie and Neil stayed with Uncle Arscott near Bowsmont. In 1903 Hughie started school at the Nevens School. Later Littlejohn School was built and known as School District # 89.
For a number of years Kate's brother, Neil McLeod, lived with them and helped with the farming. One day, about 1900, eight horses on two binders ran away with Neil McLeod and another farmer, George Wilker. Neil was taken to Winnipeg for treatment by Kate. His injury resulted in the amputation of his right leg.
In December of 1910, just before Christmas, Kate and her brother, Neil, went to Lindsay to spend Christmas with their father, John McLeod, sisters Annie and Christine and brothers Hughie, John and Norman. Kate and Neil returned to Glasston March 4, 1911. Kate contacted phenomena and passed away March 11, 1911. She was buried from the Methodist Church in Glasston; Reverend Newlove was the Pastor. Road conditions were so terrible that burial took place in the Glasston Cemetery and the body was later moved to the St. Thomas Cemetery.
Her death left Bill with Billie, just nine years old, Rachal, Rose, Wes and Hughie still all at home. Neil, Hattie, Sara, Ida and Maggie were all married and had left home. Wes, Hughie and their father continued to farm until 1922, when they sold the farm to the Miller Brothers.
As the years went by, Dad became more crippled and in due time the rest of the family married and went out on their own.
