The James Littlejohn Family
James Littlejohn, born April 25, 1863 in Lindsay, Ontario, Canada, was one of ten sons and three daughters born to Humphrey Littlejohn and Harriet Metheral Littlejohn who moved to Lindsay, Ontario, Canada from England.
James Littlejohn arrived in Grafton, ND in the spring of 1882 and found work on a farm near Conway, ND. In 1884 he filed a homestead claim on SW1/4 Sec. 4-160-52 located four miles east of Glasston, ND.
He built a tar paper shack and began his pioneer farming career, living alone, determined to succeed. Life was hard in those days. Breaking a few acres of sod, planting by hand, and tending the livestock left little time for relaxation. Reminiscing about winters, he stated "there were several pioneers in the area, all living alone on their claims; in the morning we would go outside to see if there was smoke coming from all the chimneys, if not it meant trouble such as sickness or death. We would all converge on that shack to see if we could help."
On December 11, 1895 James married Iva Etta Van Camp who was born at Winchester, Ontario, Canada on February 5, 1872. Four children were born on the farm, Willard and Stanley, May 22, 1897; Raymond, February 13, 1899; and Estella May, August 14, 1901. There were four grandchildren.
In addition to his grain and livestock farming, James would take two teams of horses into the Northern Minnesota forests and skid timber during the winter.
James was on the school board of the "Littlejohn School" for several years which was located 3 miles east of Glasston, ND. He and Etta were members of the Glasston Methodist Church. They continued to farm the original until James and Etta passed away April 23, 1951 and January 8, 1954 respectively.

The James Littlejohn Family of Glasston
James Littlejohn was born at Lindsay, Ontario, Canada, on May 25, 1863, the son of Humphrey and Harriet Littlejohn. Harriet's maiden name was Metheral and Humphrey was a citizen of England before immigrating to Canada.
At the age of 19 he traveled by train by way of Chicago to Grafton, N. D., which was the end of the line at that time. Due to the fact he was too young to file a homestead claim, he worked on a farm at Conway, N. D., for two years.
At age 21 he filed a claim four miles east and one-fourth mile north of Glasston, N. D., where he resided and farmed until his death in 1951.
A short time after building a tar paper shack on his claim his father, Humphrey Littlejohn, nine sons and three daughters came to Glasston area and took up claims. One of the sons remained in Ontario most of his live and later moved to Detroit, Michigan.
After living several years in his tar paper shack, he built a farm home on the homestead where his son Willard Littlejohn still lives today.
On December 11, 1895, he married Etta Van Camp, daughter of George Van Camp of St. Thomas, N.D. James and Etta had three sons, Willard, his twin brother Stanley, who died at age 3 months, and Raymond, and a daughter Estella who lives in Grand Forrks at present.
Raymond married Florence Hanna, daughter of Stephen Hanna of St. Thomas, N. D. They have four sons, Earl, Harvey, Keith, and Duane. At present they have seven grandsons, nine granddaughters, five greatgrandsons and three great granddaughters. Raymond and Florence reside at their farm home three miles north of St. Thomas.
