Emanuel Littlejohn
Jan. 6, 1858 - May 12, 1936

Elizabeth Moore
April 12, 1861 - June 1, 1926

The name was originally spelled Littlejohns but the "s" was dropped as time passed.

Emanuel Littlejohns was the seventh child of Humphrey and Harriet Littlejohns, who followed nine of their sons to North Dakota. He was born in Victoria County, near Little Britain, Ontario, Canada, a member of a family of three daughters and ten sons. Their names in order of birth were Arscott, born in 1847; William, 1849; Harry, 1850; John, 1851; Ann, 1852; Jennie, 1856; Emanuel, 1858; Malissa, 1959; Samuel, 1861; James, 1863; Thomas, 1865; Albert, 1968; Thornley, 1870.

Emanuel Littlejohn came with brothers to Pembina in 1881 where they worked in a lumber camp for a time, and then traveled south and west in quest of land. Emanuel settled in Midland Township, range 52, section 5, where he built a hut and slept in to fulfill the government requirement for homesteading. Later he built a shanty in which he and two brothers lived for several years. Samuel would spend the winter taking care of the oxen and other stock while the other two, Emanuel and William, went to work in the lumber camps in Minnesota to the east of Pembina. In the spring they returned to cultivate their homestead where they raised mainly wheat and some oats for animal feed.

The fall of 1887 Emanuel returned to his old town near Little Britain. Emanuel Littlejohn and Elizabeth Moore were married Feb. 15, 1888. The Littlejohns and Moore families lived near each other in Ontario.

Elizabeth Muir was born in the county of Lanark, Scotland. In youth she came with her parents and other members of the family to Little Britain, County, Ontario, Canada. The Scottish name was spelt Muir, but somehow through the immigration papers, it changed to Moore.

The young couple came to Emanuel's homestead quarter on the immigrant train. In Ontario, they filled one-half a railroad car with farm machinery and household possessions. Ed Start filled the other half with his goods and it was shipped on the same train as the couples rode. It was a long train on which many settlers came.

A few years later Emanuel bought another quarter of land NE-7-160-52 in Midland Township for $2.00 per acre and build a fine brick house on it in the summer of 1889. It is still a lovely building. His family can remember seeing the tears come to his eyes as he stood on the front porch watching the hail storm destroy his beautiful crop. Of course there was no hail insurance then.

Children of Emanuel Littlejohn: Norman, Elsie, Olive
Scanned from locl history book.

Their family consisted of Roy, 1889-1933; Amos, 1890-1898; Violet, 1892-living; Norman, 1894-1964; Olive 1896-living; and Elsie 1899-living. Roy married Hilda Olson and continued to farm on the home place. Norman married Mary Stull and they lived on a farm just west of the home place. Olive married Benjamin Heazlett and lived on a farm 3/4 mile north of the home place. Violet and Elsie went to Chicago where they attended the University of Chicago. Elsie, who passed away April 14, 1979, was married to L. Dow Nichol. They resided in Glen Ellyn, Ill. Violet worked in Chicago and now lives in a retirement home in Grand Forks. All the girls were school teachers.

Emanuel, a member of the Methodist Church board of Glasston, helped plan, build and establish the Methodist Church of Glasston and was trustee of it for thirty years or more. He donated the land on which Littlejohn School was built in District 89 while he was president of the board, and served on the school board for approximately thirty years. He also served on the township board. He was a member of Woodman Lodge.

Elizabeth Littlejohn died of injuries received when she was thrown from a buggy drawn by her normally quiet horse. Emanuel Littlejohn continued to live on the farm until his health failed. He spent about one and one-half years living back in Ontario, and later with his daughter, Olive Heazlett, and her family until the time of his death.
